Training workshop a success

A researcher training session held in Erbil last month has been described as very informative

A training workshop organised by the Education, Peace and Politics (EPP) team in Erbil last month was described as a ‘great success’ as researchers from across Iraq discussed different methods and challenges facing academia. 

The training was organised by Ulster University and UNESCO, with support from the Canadian Embassy. 

Researchers from a broad range of disciplines and guests from Iraq’s Ministry of Education were in attendance.

Attendees discussed different research methods, gender equality, peacebuilding, data collection and other challenges brought about by conflict and sectarian divides. 

Jumana Al-Waeli, research fellow at Ulster University who led the training session with Nidal Al Haj Sleiman, said: “We had some very productive conversations about the many challenges faced by researchers and teachers in Iraq. 

“It was so great to see the passion and enthusiasm displayed by such a broad range of Iraqi researchers. Having asked guests to introduce themselves, it was soon clear the room was packed with a rich variety of academic disciplines and expertise. 

“We discussed research ethics and practical measures that can help build a foundation of academic expertise in Iraq.”

Jumana added: “I hope our researchers left the sessions with fresh insight into the nature and challenges of producing quality academic research.”
